Luxury in Tulum

Ever find yourself scrolling thru instagram and wondering if some of those amazing travel photos you always see even exist? Well that’s how we stumbled on this gem! One night in Iceland we were wrapping up our evening and we were using instagram as a way to find some cool spots along the ring road. A little while later I found myself completely distracted with the original purpose and found this absolutely magical looking hotel! Not just any hotel, the kind of unique places we like to go! We knew right then that would be our next trip and just a few months later we were there!

Tulum

The location was Tulum, Mexico just a short drive from Cancun. We had been to Cancun before, but it didn’t exactly fit our style. We had zero expectations for Tulum and just assumed we would spend most of our time at this amazing place we found on instagram called Azulik, after all that was the sole reason for our visit! Azulik did not disappoint and actually surpassed anything we expected. I would rank this as one of the best and most unique hotel rooms that we have stayed in. Now I am not talking about best experiences, it was a great experience, but I am talking about the room and hotel itself and how amazing and beautiful it was!

Azulik

This isn’t just any boutique hotel. Definitely not made for everyone and exactly why we loved it! Azulik is completely crafted with a wooden design and made to look like a magical adult treehouse. It has less then 50 rooms but honestly you wouldn’t even think there were that many with the way its set up. I want to say there was 7 sea villas and 7 sky villas which were set along the Caribbean Sea with the most incredible views! The other villas within the property that you could choose from were the Aztec, Mayan, jungle and moon villas.

Sea Villa

We stayed in the sea villas which were right below the sky villas and I am really glad we choose those. It put us much closer to the rocks below and the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks as you slept was so peaceful! Imagine your room being completely open to the fresh breeze coming off the water and waking up every morning to the sound of the waves hitting the rocks just below you and looking out to the most colorful sunrise’s. How can you beat that! If all of that wasn’t already enough, stepping out of the room onto the patio was a small infinity pool that spilled over onto the rocks below accompanied by a relaxing day bed or choice of swing! This was by far our most favorite hotel room that we have stayed in!

Off the Grid

Another reason that we loved Azulik so much was the fact that it had no electricity! The entire hotel uses nothing but natural candle light and was absolutely beautiful at night. In the evenings around 4pm the staff or “angels” as they called them would come around and light all of the candles throughout the entire hotel. The room didn’t have a shower, just a tub, and it runs off of mineralized water from the cenotes underground. The water is considered sacred in the Mayan culture. Another thing to note would be the open design, if you are looking for shear privacy this might not be the room for you, they are private for the most part though!

Luxury SPA

In addition to the rooms being so spectacular the hotel had an AMAZING spa, a few restaurants and bars, a private clothing optional beach, concierge lounge and a boutique shop. The staff or angels as I mentioned before were extremely helpful. They arranged a private car to take us to and from the airport, we had two bottles of wine and a lovely arrangement of flowers waiting for us in our room and they also helped us book a private tour to three cenotes and packed us a delicious organic lunch. Our guide for the day was great and the tour was well worth the money, the lunch alone was worth it!

Gourmet food

The restaurants… let me tell you about those! The restaurants were a one of the kind experience. If you visit Tulum and don’t stay at Azulik you have to at least make sure to get dinner at one of the restaurants or stop by for a drink just to check out the scene. It certainly won’t disappoint! There is no way to give this place any justice by trying to describe it, you just have to experience it for yourself!

Boutique Paradise

The biggest surprise for us was how much we ended up loving Tulum. After spending time in Cancun previously and only being an hour or two away we didn’t really have any expectations, hadn’t done any research on the town itself and didn’t plan on leaving Azulik. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the small town vibes and boutique hotels. It reminded us of Costa Rica in some ways. We had a great time walking around, renting bikes and exploring the different shops and restaurants. We will definitely be back one day!
